Overview
Bassin des Esclaves, a fountain built for the slaves to provide them with drinking water around 1786 because of the high number of government slaves affected by dysentery. Although it is not certain that the fountain was exactly in this location, there is a rich oral history of the village, collected in 2013 by National Heritage Fund researchers. The ‘Bassin’ was a place where slaves were brought and washed before being taken for sale to the Place du Bourg, an area in front of what is now the District Council, where village activities (such as the sale of produce and even slaves) would take place.
